Apple Pay on Apple Watch displays “see phone for instructions”

Why does my new Apple Watch Series 7 display the message “See phone for instructions” when I attempt to pay with the watch? The card is definitely in the wallet on my Apple Watch, and I received confirmation from the bank as well. The passcode feature is on (I read that it must be on in order to use Apple Pay). The only difference between this Series 7 and my previous Series 2 is that my Series 7 has activated cellular service. I tried to pay at two different retailers and received the same message both times. I was able to pay with my phone, but I do not want to have to use my phone as that defeats one of the main benefits of the watch.

Yes, my cards are on both the watch and the phone wallets. Interestingly, sometimes the card works on the watch and sometimes it doesn’t. I had a call with an Apple agent and she had me install the most recent Apple update. I have auto updates but the newest one had not yet processed. She said my watch had updated already so perhaps there was a glitch due to that. I’ll post on whether or not this works once I’m able to test it.

I actually just went through those steps. Both devices are brand new. The iPhone 13Pro is having Bluetooth issues with my car and AirPods so perhaps it’s related to that. The tech agents at both Apple and Verizon were unable to resolve this issues. Verizon is supposed to be sending me a new phone, so maybe that will clear up everything. For example, when I place calls in CarPlay, I have to go to my actual phone and respond to this message: “Last line no longer available. Do you want to call using your remaining line?” I’ve got a mess over here and it’s making me very frustrated with Apple. Lots of issues and many hours of troubleshooting and phone calls.

I've had issues with cars before as well as Bluetooth.

If it were myself I would go back to the lowest common denotator.

Remove all Bluetooth devices, reboot.

Sounds like you are running dual sim? If that is so I would start there and make sure that is working fine.

Then add your Bluetooth devices one a time (starting with your most important one) and make sure everything works

Once it works with the first device, then add a second Bluetooth connection and test again till you see failure or everything work.

As you said above it may just be a wonky phone.

Good luck!

Thanks! Pardon my ignorance but what’s a dual sim? I should only have the standard as I just have what came in the phone directly from Verizon. I read that if you buy straight from Apple, then it’s an eSim; however, if you buy from a carrier like Verizon then the Sim is physically inserted in the phone before receiving it. Whatever is in my phone is what came in the phone pre-installed, so I guess I can’t say for sure what it is.
