Jumping from Catalina directly to Monterey may be technically possible, would suggest going to Big Sur first.
Then while in Big Sur, test how it works.
Once that is achieved, then make the move to Monterey

Make Time Machine Backup is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS
Sometimes using Wi-Fi to successfully download an OS upgrade will work, but most often it will not and the file becomes corrupted. Instead, you should use a wired Ethernet connection for downloading updates and upgrades. it's safe and much faster.
