laptop stays on when closed

hi,

weird issue where I close my laptop and it appears to go to sleep, however I pull it out an hour later and it is still running and VERY hot while sitting in my backpack on a hot summer day. Obviously not good for the CPU and fan. Not sure why this keeps happening again and again. Everything is up to date. I have sleep options set as expected.

This was an issue that occurred with older Macs (circa 2015-2018). I had it happen several times with a 2018 15" MBP, usually when I was working clamshell mode (connected to external display/keyboard/trackpad), and disconnected the Mac to leave home/work. Rather than just disconnecting it, I started using Apple menu > Sleep before disconnecting it, and that stopped the 'wake-in-satchel' problem for me.

With my newer Macs (16" 2019 Intel, 16" 2021 M1 Pro), that doesn't happen anymore even if I just disconnect them.
