iPhone 4 - Error 9 during Restore

Hi there,

I'm trying to Restore the iPhone but Error 9 keeps popping up. The iPhone is literally a dud now just stuck on the screen with the cable and iTunes symbol.

I've tried doing the Restore on a 13" MB Pro, iMac and Windows Vista 64 bit, all bringing up the same error. I am running iTunes 9.2.1 on all machines.

Any advice or info appreciated.

Thanks.

I had this problem on 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 during the firmware upgrade process. Each time had a different error message, but my solution was similar in both cases.

I am behind a firewall, so to troubleshoot:

The first time I jumped onto a "guest" wireless network, and was able to complete the update right away.

The second time (error 9) I added exceptions to my (Astaro) firewall allowing the URLs provided in apples article TS1275.

Point being, if you can access a different network (maybe without a firewall), you might have the same luck I did.

The error 9 threw me off, and I was swapping USB cables, trying different PCs etc.

Good Luck

I got this going too. Failing in the same spot during "Restoring iPhone firmware" a few times now. I turned off the firewall, changed cables and changed USB ports and so far no luck. Error 9 and error 31something. Would be strange if it were my PC after a hard boot, port and cable change especially seeing as the firewall is off. But, thats about all thats left so I'm off to try another PC.

This is EXTREMELY frustrating. Same issues here.

Have tried with the computer the 16GB iPhone 4 is synced with, both USB ports, 4.0, 4.0.1, and 4.0.2. Error 9. Rebooted twice. Still nothing.

Ditto for my own Core i5 MBP, which I used earlier this evening to update my own 32GB iPhone 4. Reboots, different USB ports, iPhone on/off...error. Status bar underneath the Apple logo gets about 60% of the way there, then either Error 9 or no information at all.

So that's 2 Macs, 4 different USB ports, 2 different downloads of 4.0.2, and I have a brick stuck in recovery mode.

Of course AppleCare's closed. Guess I'll have to schedule a Genius appointment tomorrow. This *****. Why would the update work just fine with one iPhone 4 and not the other?

Well Applecare's open HERE (western Pacific). Our calls go thru to Singapore. Went thru first level tech, no go. Second level tech tried a few other things, but couldn't get the update to go thru. Asked for iTunes updater logs and System Profile to be emailed to them.

Clearly some issue related to the updater. Always a worry when Apple has to do anything quick.

Same problem here with a Mac. Since it is late in the day I've made a Genius Appt for tomorrow early afternoon. I've done all the troubleshooting tricks I can think of (complete R&R of iTunes, mobile support stuff, changed cables, changed ports, removed backups, etc.). It always gets to the same firmware update point and punts.

Seems I had to do one restore when going to iOS 4.01 .. so I'm now wondering if it's the phone hardware (since I've done a complete swap out of my MacBooks iTunes-related software.

But I'll keep trying: I really don't want it to be the phone, which is great in all visible and operational respects.

I know I won't be updating my wife's iPhone 4 until I get this resolved.

Problem SOLVED...for me.

Went over to my 2nd choice when troubleshooting Mac/iPhone/iPod issues, MacRumors.com. In their forums, I found a link to a "RecBoot Exit Only" application bundle. I followed the instructions in the iPhone Forum section of the MacRumors.com 'site, and am good to go.

The 16GB even shows 4.0.2. Looks like 4.0.2 can't get out of Recovery mode or whatever it's in, but that app did the trick.
