iPhone 4 - Error 9 during Restore

Hi there,

I'm trying to Restore the iPhone but Error 9 keeps popping up. The iPhone is literally a dud now just stuck on the screen with the cable and iTunes symbol.

I've tried doing the Restore on a 13" MB Pro, iMac and Windows Vista 64 bit, all bringing up the same error. I am running iTunes 9.2.1 on all machines.

Any advice or info appreciated.

Thanks.

OK i fixed it by doing a hard reboot of the phone.
I got a new iphone 4 and was giving me error 9 every time i tried to update it.
I just did a restart of the phone using home and power button while the USB was disconnected. Then connected the phone to the USB and tried restore and upgrade using itunes and it worked.
No messing with files and folder.Simple fix.
Apple did drop the ball on this one.

I just got my iphone 4 today.. Everything was working great, did my sync had everything loaded then I proceeded to do the os update. What a bad idea that was.. Bricked my phone not even 30 min out of the box. Luckily I came here and found this thread.. Can't believe a company like Apple would have a problem like this no less on a software upgrade for their premier phone! Recboot saved my phone, thanks to everyone who gave it a shot. I was so upset i **** near returned the phone and picked up a samsung.

agreed. everybody should try recboot, it is as simple as it can be, download, start the .exe, 1 click and there you go.
i tried everthing, 3 different pcs, 2 different routers, disabling literally everything exepct itunes, reinstall, different cables, safe mode - nothing worked, always this **** error. from today i really hate the number 9.
trying to update since 10 pm, now it's 4:50 am, and then just one click in recboot and everything is fine... dude i really wish i would have found that thread earlier.

After trying to upgrade Iphone to 4.0.2 update failed with error(9) and phone required restore to factory setting. The restore process also kept getting error(9). RecBoot Exit worked for me. Phone gets stuck in upgrading firmware. Tried numerous recommended fixes multiple computers, XP, Win7 Mac OSx, sync cables etc. Continued to get the errror(9).

RecBoot unbricked my phone - I recommend it.

Hi!

I, too, have been frustrated for hours!!!! This worked for me....

Go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and download the 4.0.1 version. When clicking on the Restore Button in iTunes, hold down the shift key and select the 4.0.1 file you downloaded from the website. Once I did this, the phone started talking with the computer again, and it updated completely to the 4.0.2 version. I can't explain it, but it worked. Good luck!

Person with the exact same problem here.

I have windows 7 and just got my iPhone 4. Plugged it into itunes and asked me to update. I proceeded to do so and 3/4 of the way it gives me an error message and goes into recovery mode. I spend at least 4 hours trying to figure out what it was, including this forum. Finally I read somewhere that ZoneAlarm firewall can have a negative effect when trying to restore. Well sure enough... I disabled my ZoneAlarm and it started working and fully updated...

Save yourself the headache and just disable all anti-virus/firewall programs before you update....

I don't know you ever gonna read this post, but in either way, I must say you THANK YOU !!! RecBoot rescue my old iPhone 4S. Even Apple itself claims that the phone is dead and they had charged me to pay 350 dollar for buying refurbished 4S. You saved my 350 dollar. It is kind a big money to me especially in those time.

Thank you 🙂
