iPhone 4 - Error 9 during Restore

Hi there,

I'm trying to Restore the iPhone but Error 9 keeps popping up. The iPhone is literally a dud now just stuck on the screen with the cable and iTunes symbol.

I've tried doing the Restore on a 13" MB Pro, iMac and Windows Vista 64 bit, all bringing up the same error. I am running iTunes 9.2.1 on all machines.

Any advice or info appreciated.

Thanks.

Powerbook 17" / Macbook 13.3", Mac OS X (10.6.4)

found out how to solve this go to unplug cable from phone and pc. Go to control panel, apperance and personlisation, folder options, view and select show hidden files.

Now go to C drive, users, select user name, app data, roaming, apple computer, itunes, and delete iphone software update. This deletes the faulty update 4.0.2. and will therefore get a clean copy

Now plug cable to laptop only, go to phone make sure it off. Hold down sleep wake button and home buttom and it reboots it. Then plug in cable and follow the usual steps. It was ask to update carrier setting and you say yes, done this and it fixed my phone

Wow, from this morning till now, this thread has already been pushed to page 5.

Okay, so O2 managed to fix my iPhone 4 and put 4.02 on it. I reckon they probably used Rec Boot too as I just couldn't do it last night after trying plenty times with different systems and cables.

Thanks everyone, hope this thread will be helpful to all others receiving this error.

Will edit the first post to point people towards Rec Boot as recommended.

Had the same problem. All attempts to restore failed. Went to the Apple Store in Santa Monica, CA and they couldn't fix it either. The resident super "Genius" told me there is no fix - they had to replace the phone. They did. He advised me not to update to the OS 4.02 until Apple engineers can fix the problem. Apparently it is bricking many, many people's phones.

Have fixed my brand new iphone 4 following another diasastrous upgrade using the lovely recboot exit (again for the second time since I bought it last week) Phoned Apple support (??) who claimed the fault lay in my itunes as that what error 9 means and the fact that recboot exit fixed it proves it.. Bunch of idiots - surely Apple need to get a grip when this is happening to so many people

Unbelievable lack of warnings to people updating to 4.02. Nowhere does it say "sync directly from your computer to the iPhone...DO NOT USE THE APPLE DOCK, OR ANY OTHER INTERMEDIATE DEVICE OR YOU WILL HAVE TO RESTORE...!" I got the Error (9) message only after several attempts at restoring. Only when I took it out of the dock and connected directly to the phone was I able to restore. Since this is such a problem, why doesn't Apple warn you before you try to sync? I have nearly always used the Apple dock to update and sync and never had an issue before. Somehow, with 4.02 this is a big issue. Someone at Apple is not getting the beta testing done. I have not had sync problems ever before switching to this new OS. What kind of dock is this if you can't reliably sync with it?!

I was running 4.0.1 stock (never jailbroken) as of yesterday. I was browsing through a wallpaper app when the entire phone locked up. I naturally did a hard reboot by holding the power and home buttons. The Apple logo appeared, but it stayed on the screen for a good 3 or 4 minutes until the "connect to iTunes" screen came up. So I connected it to iTunes to find out it was in recovery mode, needing a restore. I clicked restore and was alerted that a new version of the OS was available, so I clicked download and restore. The restore never worked, it just kept giving me error 1603 and error 4. It was essentially stuck in a loop. I tried reinstalling iTunes to no avail and even tried to use a different computer with no luck.

Long story short, I took it into the genius bar and they tried to do the exact same things I had already proven not to work. Needless to say, they couldn't restore the phone either so they swapped it no questions asked.

My replacement came with 4.0.1 on it, so I restored my data and settings before updating to 4.0.2. No problems to report, and all is well.

I had the same problem with the restore always freezing during the firmware stage. I was plugging directly into the computer's USB with no docking station. I tried all the fixes from the apple site and eventually called support. He simply had me unplug and turn off the phone, then hold the home button while plugging in the cable. This fixed the problem entirely! I was frustrated that such a small fix was successful after hours of much more complicated fixes. Hope this works for others.

I got it! Successful upgrade of iPhone 4 32 GB from iOS 4.0.1 to iOS 4.0.2!!!
After first attempt I received "Error 9" I tried this several times - allways the same result.
Then I put the iPhone as far as possible (max length of the original USB cable) away from my computer and that works! It seems to me, that the original USB-cable or iPhone itself is not resistent against electro smog comming from my computer.
