macOS Music App Forgets Windows Location/Size

This is not a new problem, and I’ve included two links to previous discussions, I have not found an actual solution, nor am I sure if it’s been acknowledged as a problem. I’m using an M1 based MacBook Pro 14, macOS Monterey (12.5), and an LG 43” UltraFine 4K external monitor.

I have a variety of Apps that I use regularly setup in useful locations on the LG — Finder, Safari, Notes, Messages, etc … and the Music App. I also have System Preferences, and the MIDI App open on the MacBook’s display.

  • If I restart the MacBook and check “Reopen windows when logging back in”; ALL of my Apps reopen with their windows in the correct location and size on both screens.
  • If I let the MacBook go to sleep, manually put it to sleep, or shut it down (box checked); ALL of the Apps/Windows reopen in the correct location on both screens, EXCEPT the Music App — it always opens on the MacBook screen, and the window size is narrower than I had it set.

I believe the problem occurs if the MacBook is asleep or off long enough for the external monitor to go to sleep. If I force the MacBook to sleep and immediately wake it back up, or shut it down and immediately restart it, ALL Apps return to the correct place — INCLUDING the Music App.

To summarize, ALL Applications I’ve tried can properly return to either screen — even when the external monitor goes to sleep — EXCEPT the Music App.

There is no place to submit feedback for the macOS Music App (nor any OS I could see), I submitted an abbreviated feedback on the issue under the Apple Music 'Service'. Though I'm hoping someone here has come up with a solution to this annoying problem.

Thank you—

I called Apple Support as suggested, as far as I can tell they didn’t try to duplicate my problem, but I did seem to convince them it was real. After a lengthy time on hold as they conferred with their colleague/supervisor/back line, they came back and asked me to use the feedback page. I explained I had done that but that there was no place to give feedback on macOS for the Music App, and that I hoped the Apple Music ‘Service’ people would forward the problem to the correct team. I also asker her to follow up and send in my ‘bug report’ … she said, “oh sure, it will be here for them to read”.

As (from the older links I referenced) this problem has been around for some time, it doesn’t seem the team finds it worth their time (or it’s too difficult to fix). I guess I can only hope other people having this problem will complain (possibly getting it worked on) or have found a fix and will post it here.

Bill--

I do appreciate your taking the time to post a response, and for recognizing I'd done my homework, however it's this vagueness on issues like this that is frustrating. No one in the other thread has had success with any of the solutions, so why should I even try them? No one giving advice on any of these threads seems to have tried to duplicate the problem and take ownership of a solution -- following 'scripts' some have even suggesting reinstalling the operating system because that solves some problems (yes, I've rebooted), this appears to me as a great waste of a user's time, and in my opinion disrespectful and possibly even irresponsible.

These comments are not pointed at you, but at the 'Specialist' community; I see more and more 'canned' responses (please restart in Safe Mode), which are often unrelated to the problem at hand. While it is frustrating to post here and not get a response, I'd think that preferable to someone repeating the problem ('I hear you'), and then cutting and pasting generic solutions (I hear some call it 'point mining').

I know there are some smart people here, and admittedly I don't know all the constraints 'specialists' are under, but there seems to be a lot of hit and run going on, and at some point it would be nice to hear: We have checked and understand that is a problem, we are <aware, unaware> that a fix is in the works.

My Music App is still sitting on my MacBook screen this morning, haven't bothered to drag it over yet (there is a void below as I write 🙂)

Something has changed, either with Apple Music 1.2.5.7 or macOS 12.5.1 or ??? Today when I woke up my MacBook and monitor, Apple Music was on the Ultrawide where I left it. I know this problem isn't permanently solved as I've still found it back on the MacBook screen, but this is a change. What I don't remember is if I put my MacBook to sleep, or let it fall asleep, possibly that makes a difference. I'll try to keep track again of what may cause it to behave properly, or poorly.
