My husband passed away, and I would like access to his phone for any messages and photos that I want to keep copies of...how do I do this?

My husband passed away, and I would like access to his iphone 8 for any messages and photos that I may wish to copy and keep...how do I do this? I remembered that his passcode is a combination of birthdays, and have tried several without success.
