How to connect monitor to MacBook with adapter

I tried to HDMI to USB-C adapters; Insignia and J-5 to connect my MacBook Pro to a Hp monitor. It connects but the monitor just blinks. I plugged it in to my iPad since it has a USB-C port and it worked fine. Not sure of the next step.

hp display is a 1680 by 1050 HDMI (or VGA) display.

To use with a modern Mac, you need to be sure you have very good cables. Modern Macs can detect transmit errors to the display, and this can cause the display to blink, go dark, or re-configure to a different resolution.

HDMI cables you want for HDMI-only Monitors (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet" --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard 720p TV set, and not much more.
