YouTube Video Stuttering

I am running a Mac mini M1 wit Big Sur and Safari 14.1.1

I use YouTube extensively, and after a while (a few weeks I'd say) All video on YouTube stutters. The audio plays fine, but the video will skip, sometimes all the way down to displaying only about one frame a second.

This is not recent, I've seen this behaviour since getting the mini. I've done several OS and Safari upgrades since then and it still happens.

I have tried deleting cookies, enabling VP9 decoders in the developer menu, and restarting Safari, none of those make a difference. The only thing that fixes it is restarting the Mac.

Never get the issue in Firefox and Chrome, I can play the same video in both at the same time and Safari stutters, the other browser doesn't.

Weird thing is, when I mouse over the video playback area in Safari and keep the cursor moving, it immediately plays smoothly again. Stop moving or move away from that area and it stutters again.

Anyone else having this issue? I'm not keen to keep doing updates and hope it's fixed, it hasn't in the past 18 months...cheers :)

Mac mini, macOS 11.4

Hi Sam Ney,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved so far. Take a look at the following resource for additional steps to troubleshoot a website not working as expected in Safari:

If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected - Apple Support

If the issue persists, let us know if this occurs when connected to a different network. Be sure to include any additional steps that you may have tried.

Have a nice day!

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safe Mode - About.

This was driving me nuts so I restarted before this reply :) I have no extensions loaded and there are no site specific settings for YouTube set up. Settings under Security and Privacy are default (JS enabled, Prevent Cross Site Tracking on).

When the issue reappears again I'll test on a different network and in a Private window to see if there's any difference. Cheers :)
