I have tried to add my child’s iCloud account to my phone so that I can turn on message forwarding in order to monitor their messages, but I keep getting the invalid account notice:

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Can you tell us the steps you are taking to enable this? Text message forwarding is only designed to forward SMS texts from your iPhone to other devices that use your same Apple ID like your Mac or iPad. More details here: How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac - Apple Support
This wouldn't work the way you are intending to use it.
