My imac desktop screen is off kilter. Some files are unreachable, and the dock is too far down the page. What should I do to fix it?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Thanks. I'll give that a try, but that note about deleting a ton of things was scary, or was that only while in safe mode? Here's what I mean: Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
Are these good?
Are you zoomed in?
Yes, caches are rebuilt as necessary. You are not deleting the item, just a copy the OS keeps in an easier to access location.
I opened the computer in safe mode, and the problem seems to have been fixed. Thanks so much for your help.
Cheers,
Myra
