silence while sleeping

In order to switch off sounds from e-mails, sms etc while sleeping I found the following options:

(1) Mail/Preferences/General/Sound for new mail/None

(2) Play sound for other e-mail incidents: Off

(3) Function button F10

(4) Function button 5) Function button F11

(6) Function button F12

(7) Menu bar: Drag the Loud speaker towards the left, to switch off sound.

Can i choose only one (1) option, to simplify matter. for my above purpose, and which button?

(I do keep Preferences / Battery / Current Adapter : (A) Prevent automatic transfer to resting state)

I always wonder why people are hesitant to shut down their computer at night. While sleeping you will not be reading your email, sms, or doing anything else on the computer. What benefit is there to leaving it on? Turning it off will clear cache, save battery eliminate the sound you are concerned about, If there is a good reason to leave a computer on when not in use I would like to hear it.
