writing numbers in Numbers

I am trying to write 3/467 in Numbers. It always automatically changes this to 3/67, which seems to be a date.

I have tried to find a setting that will allow me to keep the text I type and not change it, but I can not find any way to stop this "feature" stuffing up my work.

Any ideas?

This happens automatically because by default the Data Format of a cell is set to "Automatic".

Two solutions to avoid the "automatic behaviour":

  1. format the cell as TEXT before entering 3/467 like this: Cell>Data Format>Text
  2. enter the text 3/467 after an apostrophe:' like this: '3/467 (Numbers will consider this as text)
