My iPod disconnects when I plug it in to my Mac mini?
The ability to play the content of a connected (manually managed) device that was in iTunes hasn't been carried over into Music/Finder in Catalina or later. If you have media on the device that isn't in your library see Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community.

See Authorization vs. association - Apple Community for more on those limitations. In particular a computer must be authorized to play and transfer protected content, however iPod classics don't count towards any of the limits so that shouldn't be an issue. Does the classic work with headphones when not connected to the computer? As I say in Catalina or later there just isn't a way to play the content directly from the connected device, you have to copy the music into your computer and add it to your library.

Hi tt2, What happens is, it shows on the desktop as a iPad, then disappears in 5 seconds and the iPod shows its disconnecting however I go to "Music" and its is there but won't play anything (songs) that it shows? thanks for any ideas. I'm not sure if I can put any new music on it or edit what's there. iTunes was much easier.
Thanks again tt2, I guess that I didn't know about authorization for different computers. I've had apple computers since Apple IIe but never paid attention to apple restrictions of limited # of computers and authorization (they always seem to work).
I have tried to unauthorized devices that I don't use anymore(old iPhones) but my iPod still will not play. seems I have a old Apple ID on the iPod so I need to call Apple to see how to delete/change this ID.
thanks for all your help.
Try another cable. Check for fluff in the docking port. Either could lead to an intermittent connection.
