I just upgraded my MacBook Air to Monterey 12.5. I now have a terrible lag when playing online games, to the point that I have stopped playing. Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

Check with the games' developers and the games' forums to see if this is a known issue with the game and/or Monterey. macOS Monterey has been notorious for introducing new issues and compatibility issues with each update patch. You may need to wait for the next patch to see if it is fixed. Games are very sensitive and have always been very problematic to keep running smoothly.
Are you running any anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, or third party security software? These types of apps are notorious for interfering with the normal operation of macOS and for affecting system performance. These types of apps are not needed on a Mac.
