When I plug in the superdrive to any of the 2 ports of Apple Air (2019) the system doesn't recognize the drive I was able to put a cd in(the drive has power) but doesn't see the drive. I try using the other usb port Reboot after removing the drive and still no go! I have the mac on battery power and have no ubs hubs attached. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

I am using the Type A to Type C adapter from Apple ($19.00) plug directly to MBA not using a hub. I rebooted plug the SuperDrive in with no results. The computer doesn't recognize the drive. Thanks for answering and I will take any other suggestions that you might have.
I'm running out of ideas. I still have a SuperDrive from years ago which works fine with my M1 MacBook Air and any and all of my other Intel Macs running everything from Catalina to Monterey and beyond.
Make sure of course the drive is right side up, black side down.

The SuperDrive has a USB-A connector. What are you using to plug it into your MBA?

Something else you can try is to reset the SMC.
Have you tried the drive while the laptop is on AC? It's possible the laptop may not supply enough power while on battery.
