I have forgotten the password to open my IMac. When I attempt to reset it, It does not recognize my username or my password.

What do I need to do?

I have a late 2006 24” iMac and have forgotten the password. Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew how to reset the password and username on a late 2006 model iMac. I would also like to keep the files on this. I’ve tried a few ways but none of them have worked. Please help. This is running on the legacy iMac operation system: Mac OS X. Logging in to iMac desktop - forgotten password I shut down my iMac (moved house etc) and have not used it in over 9 months... when I booted it up the other week, I was unable to log in, and cannot remember the password (and the hint was too cryptic for me to remember the really clever thing I thought of at the time) I have reset my Apple ID, but the machine obviously has a local password and its not letting me past the login screen... Am I missing something? How do I bypass or reset the login at startup? Thanks

Cant log in as user, & forgot iMac password. So a few years ago, I must have deleted a file that kept asking me for passwords on my iMac, I figured I didn't need it since I am the only user. This week I did an OS update, and it asked my my computer password, not my Apple ID. I typed it in, and it did not work. I did the "command" R startup to utilities, and then terminal to reset the password, but on the square box where the list of users would be, there are no names, it is totally blank. I can't seem to find any other way to do this. I reinstalled Catalina OS and it did it fine, but still the same problem. My iMac is from late 2012, and it runs from an external SSD. Any suggestions? Thanks.
