loading old iMessages taking a long time

I want to print a message string from my iMessage. It goes back about 4 months so there is a lot there. I am trying to scroll back to the original message so that I can print them.

It is taking forever to go scroll back to the first message. Like hours.

I scroll back 1 screen.

Get a message that it is loading.

Finally loads, then I try to scroll back to previous one.

Takes forever to load, like 2 minutes or more. Then that screen of messages load and I scroll back to the next one. On and on.

Side note the later messages seemed to load more quickly, not that I am farther back it takes longer.

Anyone know why it would take that long to scroll back to the original message

Although we're unable to say specifically what's causing this, we can troubleshoot with you to help to isolate this behavior further.

You could start by checking the available storage on your Mac and free up space if you can: Free up storage space on your Mac

You can also use Activity Monitor to ensure that you don't have any tasks that may not be responding: Check if your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor - Apple Support

You may also consider starting your Mac in Recovery Mode and check the disk for any errors as outlined here: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility
