Apple airdropped a confidential file to a complete stranger

I tried to airdrop a business presentation I was working on my macbook for a client and to send it to my iphone to send it via whatsapp.

I couldn't select my own phone for the airdrop, this happens from time to time, I got used to it, but what happened instead to my surprise?

IT SENT IT TO A RANDOM GUY IN A CAFE WITHOUT MY CONSENT, IN A TRADE SHOW FULL OF POTENTIAL COMPETITORS, AND OF COURSE, THE RANDOM GUY ACCEPTED THE FILE AND RECEIVED IT AND I COULD NOT CANCEL THE SEND ON TIME.

  1. There is no way for Airdrop to send it to a random person on its own. If you tapped on a person that showed up in the AirDrop list then you yourself sent it. It was not Apple. AirDrop does not start until you actually tap on someone. Apple does not magically make your device do things without your consent.
  2. To avoid things like this, you can set your Airdrop to only show people or devices in your contact list, instead of everyone.
