Certificate For This Server is Invalid

When is Apple going to address the “the certificate for this server is invalid” error that pops up on iPhone when driving or any random place away from my home network? It started several Months ago, after the latest OS update. It’s especially dangerous because it most often pops up (repeatedly) while I’m using GPS navigation. So I have to continuously look away from the road to press “cancel”.

iPhone 11, iOS 15

I’m not using a VPN, nor did I make any changes on my iPhone 11. It started happening seemingly at random. I tried restarting my phone, and it stopped happening for a few days but then started again. The latest popup message was:

“The certificate for

this server is invalid.

You might be

connecting to a

server that is

pretending to be

"play.itunes.apple.co

m" which could put

your confidential

information at risk.”

But I get other similar ones.

I just tried turning “Ask to join other networks” to Off, so hopefully that will stop the problem. I’ll update if it does.

I know of no such problem. Are you using some kind of VPN or something on your phone? That's the only thing I could think of that would cause that. Sometimes, various "security" apps will install their own man-in-the-middle exploit to "protect your privacy". Usually that is something that you would see on a desktop, not a phone. But phones can use VPNs and I don't know the detail of how a VPN is implemented on the phone. Is your phone randomly joining WiFi networks? That would cause the problem too.

In this context, that error usually means somebody is intercepting (or trying to intercept) secure network traffic. Or maybe a content delivery network (CDN) error.

If there’s an add-on VPN app in use here (apparently not?), or any add-on “security” app or anti-virus app, or an ISP that’s inclined, that might be trying to access encrypted traffic. Remove those, restart, and try again.

Try a different Wi-Fi network and not just cellular if you’re using that, if you have not already.

If no add-on apps…And same issues on other networks… Reset your network settings, clear saved website data, restart the iPhone, and try again.
