When I put keynote movie slides as a subtitles into iMovie, it has started to make the video darken considerably. Previously I used to be able to add the Keynote using the blue/ green screen. I saw this question asked in 2021 but there were no solutions. If anybody has any bright ideas, I would be grateful. thanks

Are you exporting an image file or a movie file?
Why don't you use the built-in Titles feature in iMovie?
If you must use Keynote, a better workflow is to add the text to a Keynote slide, set the background to No Fill then export as a PNG file.
