i am using the Mail app on my iPad and iPhone. I recently switched from an AOL account to GMail. When I deleted emails before, I could find them immediately in Trash in case I had accidentally deleted them. With GMail, they do not appear in Trash. Is there a setting somewhere that is not correct? Where can I find ones I just deleted, or are they just gone?

Google Mail by default saves discarded email to the Archive Mailbox folder. To delete discarded mail, you need to change your mailbox settings:
Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Gmail Account] > [Account] > Advanced > [Move Discarded Messages Into] Deleted Mailbox
