my phone says that’s it’s on a max volume but i can’t hear any audio. this has happened a few times before and i could fix it bug this time i can’t fix it. do i need to do a software update??

80% is not healthy and is to be expected in a 5 year-old battery. Have the battery replaced and your volume will (probably) come back:

Does your iPhone 8 still have its original battery?
And what's the Maximum Capacity % here?...
Settings > Battery > Battery Health

it has had the same battery for about 5 years and the capacity is 80%
Have you checked the Mute switch on the left side of the phone above the volume buttons?
