I can’t figure out how to get my audio file from my email in my iPhone 12 into my music on my iPhone 12. (It’s my own recording, not commercial) I will not believe that this is not possible: I’m from the “It just works” generation.

You'd need to do it through your computer. Add the file to the "Music" app (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) and then transfer it to your phone.

As I noted in my first response, I believe you need to do this using your computer. That's the way it has always been and I don't know that it has changed.

You used to be right. That is how I got over 40 of my recordings into the music app on iPhone 12.
I just tried to add one the way I use to: Plug in the iPhone12 by USB, Open iTunes, drop the audio file on
my device - iPhone: Result is: works no more!! So disapointing! El Capitan 10.11.6, IOS 15
Did you follow the directions in the article I linked to above? Drag and drop was always a little problematic, depending on your settings. You may have more luck syncing rather than using drag and drop. Note, however, that if the existing personal music isn't also set up to sync, it may be deleted.

Never problematic for me, know the steps! Can not use sync to chance un-replaceable files!
I did over 40 file transfers. Now it does not work anymore!
Thinking what do people do without a computer? Very disappointing!!

Sorry but I haven't transferred music to my iPhone from my computer in years. Hopefully, someone will come by with more knowledge.
You might try searching the forums for posts by turingtest2. He's the resident iTunes expert.
You cannot upload your own music onto Apple Music.
