Trackpad keeps selecting everything!

Recently my trackpad seems to keep selecting everything when I roam around the screen with my mouse. Its been doing it for the past week, and I can't figure out how to stop it.

I dual boot Windows 7 and Mac OS X (10.6.4) and this problem is not occurring in Windows, only in Mac.

Any suggestions???

I've got the same problem! Though I don't have the Aluminum (I hope that doesn't matter) but this error is EXTREMELY frustrating! I can't type a sentence without it usually selecting everything and deleting my typing. I'm so glad I'm not the only one having problems here. I've tried everything. The restarts, the different trackpad options, etc. But since I no longer have the AppleCare plan (it expired), They want to charge me 50 bucks just for me to tell them about a problems THEY created! i'd love it if someone who still does have a protection plan or whatever to report this and make as big of a fuss as possible. And then to show them we're not all crazy, this thread! It's so frustrating! Especially for someone like me who is a full time student, so I do all my work on my mac!

Would appreciate any updates! 🙂

Same problem as everyone else, the only way I can get it to fix is by clicking furiously but that's probably more a sign of frustration then any great technical knowhow. It eventually stops though. Never happened before that software update either.

Actually did it again while typing this =_=

Someone go poke apple with a large stick or throw a rock at their head or something to make them work faster.

Soooo annoying, been happnening for several days now!! There hasn't been a surefire way for me to stop it when it happens, I usually just click around fast and sometimes it goes away (only to come back later -_-). I was worried that it would be a hardware issue, but seems to be a software issue since it doesn't affect WIndows on my computer. Apple please fix this soon!!!!! It is EXTREMELY annoying. It keeps sending links of the page I'm on to my iChat windows -_- NOT COOL!

I have had the same problem and took my macbook in for repair. They said I needed a new faceplate that would cost about $300 all told. I passed on that and tried various things suggested in this post. THEN I got the idea to just bypass the trackpad so I purchased a mouse.

I had to play with the settings because at first the mouse was doing the same thing the track pad was, just selecting everything. Because I'm on Snow Leopard the setting to ignore trackpad is now under "Systems Settings" then under "Universal Settings" and I turned "Mouse Keys" to "on" then also selected "ignore trackpad when mouse is present" and also "ignore trackpad when Mouse Keys is on". I also selected "enable access for assistive devices".

I do not know if all of these need to be selected but it's working for me so I'm not going to mess with it. But disabling the trackpad seems to be what worked.

I had the same problem with my late 2008 MacBook, as did my daughter with her new MacBook. I took it in to the Apple Store (a long distance trip, no less) and they kept it to replace the frame... said they had been having problems with it cracking and that was causing the problem. Since it was defective and a common problem, they fixed it for free and I've had no problems since. I literally could not navigate without everything sticking to my cursor. Good luck... I hope this helps! 🙂

I turned "one finger dragging" back on last night - I have been happily using my MacBook Pro without the "cursor selecting everything" problem since turning off one finger dragging on September 8th. But I felt that I shouldn't have to disable features on my computer to fix a problem not created by me, so turned it back on to see if the problem would come back. Last time I tried turning it back on, the problem came back very quickly.

So far, this time, no problem. Maybe I am speaking too soon as it hasn't even been 24 hours yet with the dragging turned on. Maybe it's just coincidence.

Usually I just install software updates when I get the little window from Apple and I have no idea what I have installed - is there somewhere I can look to see what I have installed on my computer? Probably a dumb question, but I am not technically inclined which is probably why I don't question the updates in the first place - I wouldn't know what they are anyway!

The same happened to me. I thought it was just me when my brother back in Spain told me that theirs was also doing it, so I figured it must be a bug rather than the trackpad being broken.

I found a solution pretty easy that fixes it (obviously just for some time) but I haven't had it that often since I started doing it. When this happens, move your arrow to the dock and with two fingers click (so secondary clicking) on any app icon and just select one of the options from the menu that pops up (i click on "hide" coz it doesn't do anything special) and boom, fixed.

Hope it'll help somebody!

@josannier: Unfortunately, unchecking the "One Finger" options for TrackPad under System Preferences does NOT guarantee the problem will go away. On my 15" MacBook Pro (aluminum case) purchased November 2008 I had all "One Finger" TrackPad options unchecked under System Preferences and the problem still occurred.

Per discussion in other threads I have since unchecked ALL TrackPad options as well as gone under Universal Accessibility and set it to ignore built-in TrackPad when there's an external mouse attached. We'll see if that helps.
