Reply to a text are sent back to a different number than the number where the text was sent from

I receive a text from phone #1, when I reply, the reply goes to phone #2. A reply should go back to the original number not a different phone number.

In this case, I have both phone #1 and #2 listed under the same contact. The reply should go back to the number it originated from, not an alternate number.

Looks like an IOS bug. Why is IOS changing the number on the reply?

I'm sorry, but that is not helpful and will not solve the issue.

IOS is having issues with text messaging when multiple numbers are provided for a single contact. IOS is replying to an incorrect phone number. It is not replying to the number that sent the message, but instead, replying to another number listed for this contact, maybe because that 2nd number is an iPhone. Apparently, I have not been able to describe this in a manner that can be addressed via this community.

In order to get around what appears to be an IOS defect, I have deleted the 2nd phone number on this contact and set up a separate contact for the 2nd phone number. I can now exchange texts with each of these phone numbers successfully. Since there is now only 1 phone number listed for each contact, IOS is able to reply to the correct phone number. Please consider addressing this scenario in future IOS updates.

dmazza01,

Thanks for following up. If possible, we recommend checking the phone number registered for iMessage on phone #2. This can be done in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. We want to make sure there's no mix up with the phone numbers used with iMessage. Take a look at the following resource for more information: Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime - Apple Support

Also, let us know if there is any issue when sending and receiving messages to and from phone #2.

Cheers!

dmazza01,

They would have to (on their iPhone) remove your contact card and set it up again to be sure it's set up to send to appropriate number or you can both remove your contacts so only the number you want responded to is listed: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

"Here's how to delete a contact:

  1. Open Contacts and tap the contact that you want to delete.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Scroll Down and tap Delete Contact then tap Delete Contact again to confirm.

"

You can also try removing the thread and starting a new one to see if it will then route properly: Delete messages on iPhone

Take care.

Thank you for the reply.

The incoming text is an SMS message. Phone 1, that is sending the text is not using an Apple ID. Phone 2 does have an Apple ID associated with it.

To be sure you understand the issue, Phone #1 send a text to my phone number, which is an Apple iPhone 11 Pro. When I reply to the text, it the reply does not go back to the number that sent the message, it gets sent to phone #2, which is an iPhone. Phone #2 did not send a text. Phone #2 never sees the initial text, but receives the reply to that initial text, causing great confusion. Why is the reply to the initial text going to the wrong number?

No, only one is my device.

Let's recap again:

  • I receive an SMS text from phone #1.
  • I reply to the text, but instead of the reply being sent to the same number that sent the text my iPhone replies to Phone#2
  • In my contact list, this contact has 2 phone numbers listed, a cell phone (phone#2) and an alternate number (Phone#1).
  • The initial text sent to me is from the alternate number (Phone #1), but the iPhone replies to the cell phone (phone #2), even though this phone number did not send the initial text.
  • The reply to a text should be sent to the number that sent the original text
  • iOS is replying to the initial text with an incorrect number from the contact list. It should reply to the phone number the text came from.
