Why am I unable to see and receive message from friends and family?

Currently I am unable to see messages sent to me by my friends and family. I only know messages were there because my watch could show the messages and communicate with them. The only solution I have right now is shutting off my phone and turning it back on, however I couldn't load those messages only see new ones. I was also connected to wi-fi and my bubbles were pushing green. My friends also said that is showed my phone was in Do not Disturb when it was in fact not in that mode. I have this issue before but my phone fixed itself. I currently have a iPhone X and its fully up to date with the current software.

Where you’ll see your notifications

Notifications go to either your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both. Learn when a notification might appear on your iPhone, instead of your Apple Watch, below.

If your iPhone is unlocked, you'll get notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch.

If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you'll get notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked with your passcode.

Some apps, such as the Noise app, are only on your Apple Watch. Notifications for these apps don't appear on your iPhone.

The red notification icon  appears on your watch face when you get a notification. When you dismiss notifications on your Apple Watch, they’re also dismissed from your iPhone.
