I used this dongle to connect my 2017 iMac running Catalina to a 12Tb gdrive pro and the iMac would not see it. I used the options usb 3 cable and it showed up. Why does the thunderbolt not work?

If that G-Drive is a thunderbolt 2 device, and you are using a thunderbolt3 <-> thunderbolt2 cable between the iMac and the G-Drive, it is not a power carrying cable and the G-drive must have its own power supply.
