I have a iMac monitor and a MacBook, I connected using a thunder cable however it says o need to press command +F2 on the iMac keyboard which I don’t have. Any other options?
First, if you mean you have an iMac not a Monitor, make sure your iMac and MacBook meet the specs for Target Display Mode. Read the link at the top of this page.
If they do, you have to get a USB keyboard for the iMac, it doesn't have to be an Apple keyboard.

The article you linked above shows that Target Display Mode, now deprecated, had very limited hardware and software requirements. What are the sub-models and macOS versions installed on your two computers? That info is available from each by doing About this Mac:
