Unable to charge Japanese PASMO in Wallet with US credit card anymore

For the past few years, I have had no problems charging my mobile PASMO in Apple wallet using a US credit card also in the same Apple wallet. As of a couple of days ago, this no longer works.

I am able to charge Mobile PASMO with a Japanese credit card in my Apple wallet, but neither of my US credit cards (both issued by Chase) work anymore.

The same is true for my partner on their phone using the same credit cards, so it seems to be either a problem specific to mobile PASMO not accepting any US credit cards or specifically Chase cards anymore, or it’s an Apple Pay problem, not being able to use US credit cards on a Japanese iPhone? Any ideas? I haven’t changed any settings on my phone.

Apple Pay PASMO recharge with USA issue VISA cards stopped working Friday August 5 JST, it started working briefly Monday August 8, but stopped again August 9 and is an ongoing issue.

Recharge situations are different for the major brands with VISA not working for PASMO and Suica:

USA issue VISA: PASMO and Suica NG

USA issue Mastercard: PASMO NG / Suica OK

USA issue Amex: PASMO and Suica OK

Mobile PASMO / Mobile Suica support says non-JP issue cards are supported for Wallet recharge and should be no problem. The official line is ‘contact your card issuer’.

On the Internet there has been discussion about this. Several credit card users have been unable to charge PASMO and Suica. Japanese credit cards work no problem, and US-based AMEX cards work as well.

The only common denominator is Apple since the problem is with several different US branded Visa cards and MasterCards and it’s a problem with both PASMO and Suica

I’ve also been having this issue when trying to reload my Pasmo or Suica via apple pay. I get the “payment not completed” notification. I’ve gotten it to work maybe twice in the past week out of pure luck. Before this week I had no issues refilling my pasmo/suica via apple pay. I’m trying to refill my pasmo/suica using US credit cards on a US iPhone and am having issues. I haven’t tried with a japanese bank card yet because I just moved here. This has been extremely inconvenient.
