I’d like a degree symbol to report my temperatures to family

Tap and hold the zero on the keyboard, then slide you finger to the alternate symbol displayed as in 0°

It’s there:

hold the zero and select it

97°

Or just hold the zero and select it instead of jumping through hoops trying to reinvent the wheel.

I haven’t either. But send yourself a text or email from your computer that has it, then copy and paste it, and keep the message around for future use. On a Mac it’s OPTION+0 (zero) º. Or just copy it from this reply😏
