MacBook Pro will not recognize my external monitor

I can't get my mac book Pro to recognize the monitor. I have the monitor connected using the USC-C digital AV adaptor. When I go to Apple menu and select Display the options do not allow me to select another monitor. Please Help

Inside system

Preferences > displays


Hold the option key and click the (Detect Displays) button that appears in the lower right of the pane..
