Do not have recovery phone # for Apple ID

My son set up a random phone number for two-factor authentication sign-up Even though he knows his password, it requires phone verification. How can he log in without a phone verification? We don't have a recovery ID set up either.

Thank you,

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.5

He will have to go through Account Recovery to change the phone # unless he is signed into that Apple ID on another device.

See if anything here helps.  If necessary, you can use account recovery as explained in the link at bottom of the article.

Verification code - how to get one and sign in with two-factor authentication.   *

If he can get a code and sign in, he needs to change/add the number on his Apple ID. Look in the Security section when signed in online. He may have to add the new number before he can remove the old number. After the change, allow up to 24 hours for the change to sync. Before trying to make the change, sign out of Messages/FaceTime on all devices/computers.

There is no way around account recovery. If there was, everyone's data would be at risk. Account recovery is the only way to change the phone number at this point. It is best to just wait it out. The more times you go online to try, the more time you will have to wait. I have waited 28 days for recovery. That's the only reason I know & now I have 3 trusted numbers. I'm sorry. 😔
