Apple Watch Messages not Mirroring iPhone (99+)

Apple Watch: Series 7 - watchOS 8.7

iPhone: 12 Pro Max - iOS 15.6

Watch messages are not being marked as read when read on the iPhone, it constantly shows 99+ messages.

Steps I've taken:

  1. Turned on and off message mirroring in the watch app
  2. Turned on and off notification mirroring in the watch app
  3. Made sure both devices where up to date
  4. Checked that background apps were set to refresh
  5. Unpaired and reset the watch, re-paired to iPhone as new device
  6. Factory reset iPhone, factory re-set watch (again), re-paired devices

Still no luck, anyone have a solution that does not require going to the Apple store?

Hi niccolelyn,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. You've tried some great troubleshooting steps so far. Just to make sure we fully understand, the issue is that the notifications remain on your Apple Watch even though those notifications were checked on iPhone. Right?

Does this only happen with the Messages app? If so, try the following from Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support.

"Set up iCloud for Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  2. Turn on Messages.
  3. Any messages currently stored in iCloud are now accessible on your device, and any new messages you receive on your device will be stored in iCloud.
  4. To see messages stored in iCloud, open the Messages app."

If it is already on, try disabling, then turning it back on. If the same continues, it may be best to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance since you've tried other troubleshooting already.

Have a great day!
