I have tried to switch off the phone via the volume up and down button then the side button no response. Read on the community page was possible via iTunes could u please give me directions how to do that?

I followed the instructions earlier today and not successful to switch off phone to even force restart the phone. A previous article on the community page suggested of connecting your phone to a Mac pro, I have Mac air via iTunes to switch it off hence hoping you can advice further
Tried that but it did not work. Any further advice?
