Ghost typing on my 2020 MacBook Air

I’m having issues with my hyphen key ghost typing. The key isn’t stuck but the computer seems to think it is and acts as though it is. It renders my MacBook almost unusable. Sometimes hitting surround keys (like =) temporarily stops it.

the only correlation I’ve noticed is that it seems to either get better or worse by opening and closing the lid.

it’s so bad that I can’t even shut down the computer and leave the lid open. The computer thinks a key is being pressed and will start the computer a few seconds after shut down.

I’ve tried resetting SMC and that did nothing.

I have the 2020 M1MacBook Air.

Hi jeaster91,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. With the unexpected keys that are entered on your MacBook Air, we recommend to restart the Mac in safe mode. This is a step that helps verify your startup disk, deletes some system caches and more. Once the MacBook Air is in safe mode, please restart it as normal and test to see if you continue to experience the same behavior. Here's how to restart your M1 MacBook Air in safe mode:

How to use safe mode

Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

These steps are outlined in this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Please let us know if that helps.

Best regards.
