Using iPhone 11 Pro Max - Take a Picture of the Moon

So with a DSLR, I would change shutterspeed and ISO to get a great picture of the moon. Last night I spent 30 minutes with Night Mode (on, off, Off/Auto/Max) trying to get a picture of a very pretty Moon. What I ended up with was a headache, frustration and either this very bright dot in the middle or this over saturated mess with a grainy feel to it. Can someone please point me to a resource that might provide detail on truly using Night Mode or is this another case where I'll need to buy a third party application because the Camera app is too "user friendly" and not able to do the cool things the hardware can do?
