no cell coverage draining my battery

I use my old iPhone X just to get news alerts. There is no cell service to this phone. It's strictly on wifi.

It's been fine sitting on my desk for a year. Just recently the battery starting quickly draining and no cell coverage has been using 94% of my battery. I have turned off all cell service and location service and nothing has helped. If I put it in airplane mode, I don't get the news alerts. My battery health is at 84%.

I don't understand why its draining the battery so quickly. The phone is updated to iOS 15.6

Put it into airplane mode and then turn on WiFi.

I had previously tried all of these things that these articles said to try. My battery is healthy, I am updated to iOS 15.6. The phone has no cell service, I use it on wifi. It has been fine for a year and then last week the no cell coverage started draining the battery even though it is turned off.

Thank you Johnathan, so far that seems to work. The battery isn't draining and I'm still getting my news alerts while in airplane mode.
