Any ideas why this happens?

Try laying the remote in an easily visible spot, so you know no-one is touching it when these interruptions happen.

Try restarting the remote to exclude errors that might be alleviated by such restart. If your Apple TV remote isn't working - Apple Support

Could someone else be pranking you with a secondary remote?
