big sur 11.6.8 - chrome & vmware fusion failing with same missing driver and framework errors

I have an Old MacBook Pro running Big Sur 11.6.8 on which suddenly Chrome, VMWare Fusion and Kindle app have stopped working.

VMware Fusion fails with an "Internal Error". Chrome "silently" fails. Kindle fails to render book covers and then hangs

I see the following 2 new messages in /var/log/system.log after I try to start these apps.

.. same for Kindle.

I was setting up a new MacBook Pro this evening. It's running Monterey 12.5. I was using file sharing between the old and new machines to copy files from old to new. After enabling file sharing on the old I'd use the Finder on the new to connect the shared directories on the old. Interestingly I noticed that since I had chosen the same user on the new machine that I had on the new machine both machines ended up with the same hostname (username-mbp.lan), though they had different IP addresses. Maybe the issue has nothing to do with this but it is coincidental. Maybe it was an upgrade that didn't take effect on the old Mac until I rebooted it.

Is there a way to get back the missing directories/files referenced in the error logs above? I tried removing and reinstalling chrome. no go. I searched my old Mac's disk for one of the files, GLRendererFloat. Found some copies in a long directory path for developers but only for iOS, macTV,... for The most important thing for me is to some how recover the VM I was using with Fusion. I'm using the tech preview version for the mac M1. (actually labelled arm64).

updating my own issue... I discovered that the problem with VMware Fusion had to do with an ACL getting attached to all of my files. I wonder if that somehow happened when I enabled sharing. I cleared it with chmod -RN and vmware fusion was able to start up (yay!). However, Google Chrome and Kindle are still not working (and logging the same errors).
