Broken iPhone 4 Home Button

All of the sudden my iPhone 4 home button stopped working. I tried hard rebooting it and that didn't fix it. It will sometimes work for a minute but for the most part it doesn't work. It didn't come in contact with any water/dirt, it just stopped working. I have Apple Care but need my phone for work so I can't have it gone for a few days. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

If it's possible I would visit an Apple Store, they might be able to replace it right away.

Worked for me....

1.) Open any application eg messages

2.) Press and hold the power button until the slide to shutdown bar appears.

3.) Release power button

4.) Press and hold Home button with normal pressure and wait until screen returns to icon screen

5.) Enjoy your functioning home button!!!

This procedure recalibrates the home button after normal wear or heavy use.

Sooo... Last night, Apple deleted my post regarding a certain "unauthorized" method to negate the need for a home button and informed me that by referencing such things I had broken the Apple Support Community User Agreement. My apologizes to anyone I may have offended, including the moderators. However, I do hope that the post helped at least a few of you.

They then went on to suggest that if I was having a problem with my product, to please use the appropriate method to report these issues at http://www.apple.com/feedback. I assume this was the politically correct way of telling me that all of our ranting and raving here will not gain the appropriate attention, but if we all send in feedback for the iPhone 4 and reference these threads, then perhaps the appropriate people will take notice. So, I would ask that you all take a moment and fill out the feedback form for you iPhone 4. It may seem silly and in all likelihood we probably won't receive any follow-up, but it is definitely worth a shot.

I'm hoping I found a simple solution, but I'm not going to get over eager. Only time will tell. Since pressing on the back of the speaker enclosure always seems to help, I decided to layer two pieces of electrical tape on the inside, bottom center of the rear panel so it lines up perfectly with the speaker enclosure. The rear panel slid back on very snugly, but not so snug that the panel needs to bend to screw it back into place (it is glass after all, so we don't want it to bend). Immediately after closing it back up, the home button regained normal responsiveness. I tapped on it about 50 times in a row and it registered every time. I'm sure the tape will compress slightly, but I'm hoping it still retains enough pressure to keep the button working. I will provide updates around a week from now and if it's still working, then again at a month. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I had tried many of the tips in this thread, to no effect. I finally opened the back of the phone, following txturbo instructions (THANKS!!!). I applied some pressure in the area indicated, then closed the phone. Total time: less than 5 minutes. Four days later, not a single instance of home button frozen! Before I would rarely go through an entire day without at least one freezing episode.

Keep in mind that:

1. To slide the back of the phone open after you remove the screws, you need to slide it UP, meaning in the direction of the power button. It will slide about half an inch or so, then you can remove it by lifting it. It took me a while to understand how to do that.

2. When I applied the pressure as indicated in the picture, I did not feel that there was any loose part that I was fixing. I got no feedback at all. However, as I said, it seems to be working.

Hi your right it is physical fault your left with sevaral options

1/ take to apple store for fix (may be expensive if your out of warranty)

2/ buy a new homebutton switch (very difficult to do yourself)

3./ take a look at this article (I tried this 1 month ago and everything works perfect) http://applecor.info/how-to/a-z/85-iphone-4s-non-responsive-home-button.html

4/This one is just a work around but still cool to know http://applecor.info/how-to/a-z/95-assistive-touch-buttons-iphone-gesture.html

I tried other tips but keeping phone on flat surface and holding Home button and turning it clockwise and anticlockwise worked for me. Actually it starts working even before just one turn.

(Or you can hold it horizontally, turn around while holding home button LOL).

But it still goes back to unresponsive after some time and I have to do it again!! :-(

"IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE"!!!!!
