Q: Broken iPhone 4 Home Button

All of the sudden my iPhone 4 home button stopped working. I tried hard rebooting it and that didn't fix it. It will sometimes work for a minute but for the most part it doesn't work. It didn't come in contact with any water/dirt, it just stopped working. I have Apple Care but need my phone for work so I can't have it gone for a few days. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

If it's possible I would visit an Apple Store, they might be able to replace it right away.

Make an appointment with an Apple Genius at the Apple Store in Fresno. They will know if it got wet or not, and if it didn't, they'll replace it or fix it.

You can't hard reboot if it's not working...

Did you attempt to restore as new? Because that's what they're going to do at the store...

I was able to hard boot it the few seconds it was working. I have tried restoring it but no luck. I am positive it didn't get we because it stopped working when it was on my table. I will take it to an apple store locally to get it checked out. Thank you guys for all your help and solutions!

    I'm having the same problem,
    I got the 32gig 4g iPhone
I've tried all the basic troubleshooting tips like:
-Resetting my settings through the general settings
-a hard shutdown (holding the power button and the home button at the same time)
I've tried reformatting and reloading from scratch, this is currently the step I've just finished and sill having the same issue

Something I've noticed is it only happens when idle for a period of time, the longer it sits idle the harder it is to get the home button to reawaken the phone.

Go to your nearest Apple Store & meet with a technician at the Genius Bar. They will mostly likely give you a replacement if they feel the issue was not caused by you.

I've had this problem a couple of times and being unable to hard reset coz of home button not responding, I found a solution online that worked for me. Apparently the port below the home button can get dusty and that causes an obstacle to the home button response, I tried applying some air pressure and it worked right away.
he did also mention the use of a clean toothbrush but i don't know about that.

I'm having a similar, intermittent problem with my iPhone 4, but note that I used air pressure to clean out my iPhone 3G's port, and I'm fairly sure that it's what was responsible for kicking a smattering of dust up between the glass and the LCD. If a toothbrush could work, I would suggest starting with that route.

I had the same problem. I used a vacuum cleaner to clear the dust. It worked!

Hello I had the same problem myself with my iPhone 4, I just tried the vac cleaner on it and its much better, I still need to press the home button a few times to get it to respond but as I say it's a lot better, maybe I should keep the vac cleaner on it for longer to make sure all the dust has gone, has anyone else found this themselves?

I am a structural engineer, and not to many things anymore suprise me. But, when I was able to unstick the home button on my iPhone 4 with a vacuum cleaner; you better believe I was amazed!
