Can't create backup of internal boot drive to external drive

My iMac drive may be failing and it has been recommended that I back up the boot drive to an external source. I have an external WD SSD drive that has been formatted. I have a partition on there with Bootcamp, which I no longer need. I have no idea if that is part of the problem. When I attempt the back up I get this message. If I click on "Container disk I" or "Macintoch HD", the Restore button is greyed out. What can I do to get my Mac drive transferred over? Thanks.

Format the external SSD as APFS and use Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner (my favorite) to backup to it.

...I'd recommend not trying to do that with Disk Utility unless you know what you are doing...
