As I expected, you are able to choose an audio output for your Teams calls.
In your device settings, you can switch from "Internal mic and speakers" to different devices.
If you install the BlackHole Audio Driver software (which is useful on its own, to allow routing audio from one application to another), you can simply select the BlackHole as output in Teams:
You can only use “tell” commands if the application in question supports those commands in its AppleScript dictionary, so again this is application dependent, not OS dependent. You can probably do this with, say, Music, but not Preview.
So which application or applications are you trying to mute?

FWiW, I found a number of possible solutions. There are a number of "muting" apps in the App Store such as Mutify, MuteKey, etc. I also found a free app called "mütesync" after doing an online search. I know nothing about the apps, how well they work, how safe they are etc.
I could provide a link but I am not sure if it would bd removed bg the moderators.
Anyway, you can easily find if you search online for “BlackHole Audio Driver”. This is free software that is available on github.
I am not familiar with Teams, but I think it should be possible. I will try to experiment later, using my wife’s mac, as she does have Teams installed. I do use Zoom, and it allows me to at least choose an audio output that is different from the one selected for the system overall. By choosing an inactive output one can effectively mute it.

I just installed Microsoft Teams on my iMac running Monterey 12.5. It has a built-in Mute Button?
If I understand correctly, that mutes the user's microphone, so that other meeting participants can't hear you.
What the OP was asking about, if I understood correctly, was how mute the sound output coming out from Teams.
If I understand your question you can't. Perhaps you could explain further.
What dialabrain said, unless the application in question has its own separate volume control.
I believe there was a solution to this in macOS Big Sur where you had to enter
tell application "application_name" set volume to 0
I was hoping if there was something similar for macOS monterey.

Hey Alanskey,
Try using what dialabrain said. If the app is downloaded from the Mac App Store, it is almost 100% safe.

I guess we need clarification.
Yeah that was my question.
Could you provide the link to install BlackHole audio driver.
