From: How to reset your AirTag - Apple Support
"An AirTag can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use an AirTag that someone else has used, they need to remove the AirTag from their Apple ID first. If the previous user removed the AirTag from their Apple ID but they were out of Bluetooth range of the AirTag, then you need to reset it before you can use it with your devices."
So basically, no, it is not shareable.

Air tags can NOT be shared.
They can only be located using FindMy on the trusted devices of the AppleID to which they are paired.

Thanks for the answer, but to be 100% clear, if I read you correctly, that means that the paired family member is the only one who can see the AirTag - even though we all share our locations and devices together?
Correct. Nothing is shared with an Airtag.
100% Correct …
And even futher … Airtag location can not even be viewed using web-based FindMy (i.e. at https://icloud.com/find) … by even the own paired AppleID.
They MUST be located using the FindMy app ON a Trusted Device.
It’s refreshing that you’re studying-up in advance. 👍
If YOUR tag is traveling WITHOUT you (i.e. “unaccompanied”) it will initiate “alerts.”
This is a mix of “beeps” by the tag and/or alerts on nearby Apple devices.
The following article should be understood by you AND whoever might be traveling w/ the “unaccompanied” AirTag.
Lastly, DO understand that an AirTag doesn’t directly communicate w/ the mobile network or even know it’s own location. It depends entirely on other cooperating devices to report it’s position. If there’s not another Apple device in fairly close proximity, the reported position will go “stale.”
For a technical primer on how it works, see this article:

Thanks... one last question... I have an AirtTag paired with my phone. The tag will be with a family member who is traveling. Will I still be able to track it, if it goes missing halfway across the country? Obviously, I don't expect any issues, but I'm just trying to be properly prepared.
