I want to "upgrade" from my first generation SE to my wife's former iPhone 6. I'm guessing, I think I would do a factory reset, then put my apple ID on the phone, then back up my the iPhone 6 as my phone? I'm also guessing somewhere I need to get boost mobile involved?

First if it hasn't been done already wipe the 6 What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
After that is done Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support
Assuming you're both with boost and the same sim card, should be able to move sim over to the 6.
