iPhone 12 mini gets hot while charging

We just purchased an iPhone 12 mini, and when we plugged it in to charge, it got very hot, even though it wasn't in a case. I've read that you should power the unit down, THEN charge it. But, that seems inconvenient, and unnecessary. Our older iPhones would get very hot while charging, but we didn't expect that behavior on a newer model like this one. Could it be a faulty charger and/or cord? We were using a newly purchased, non-Apple brand product. Any thoughts?

The power-down charging procedure is true, but you have to plug it in right before powering it off otherwise the phone will just turn on automatically. Charging while powered off does indeed reduce the heat from charging, however.

In any case it shouldn't get any warmer to the touch above being detectable - As if you microwaved something for 10 seconds. If it is getting hot as in, uncomfortable to touch, yes there is something wrong. Use an official Apple charger and if that doesn't work take it in for diagnostics.

Define "very hot." Any iPhone when being charged gets warm. The nature of charging a phone causes the battery to heat up. If the phone cannot be touched due to it being too hot, that would indicate an issue. But then your iPhone has circuitry built in to protect if from overheating. Are you seeing any warning message suggesting your phone needs to cool down?
