iPad or Mac? You posted in a Mac forum. The answer may be totally different for iPad. For a hardware keyboard set to US, § is Option 6.

Most symbol characters are pretty easy to find. In most applications, use Edit -> Emoji & Symbols

From here you get a popup menu with categories of symbols and a palette of characters to choose from.

Most importantly, you can type into the top field the name of the symbol you're looking for.



Once you see the character you're after, double click on it to add it to the front document at the current insertion point.
