Problem I had with my old data after restarting my iphone

I have a small question about my iPhone and if anyone could give me any help it would mean so much to me. For some background information, I forgot my iPhone password and I tried it so many times it locked me out so I followed tutorials online on how to save my data onto my computer when I have to restart my phone again. I was able to successfully download all of my photos and things I had saved on my iCloud to my computer and when I restarted my phone it downloaded everything back on to there. Everything seemed fine until I checked my iMessages and all of my conversations and group chats were gone. I was confused because it had saved my contacts and names in my contacts app but all of my messages were gone. When I asked one of my friends to message me, it started a brand new conversation and once people in group chats started talking I couldn’t see any past messages or photos. I’m not sure if iCloud saves your messages and conversations but I asked a friend while also restarted their phone and she said that iCloud saved her messages and all of her conversations were there after she restarted her phone. Does anybody know if it is possible for me to get my old messages back or any information on that? Sorry for the long message, and thank you to anyone who has any advice.

If you were syncing Messages with iCloud, have you tried signing out of Messages, restarting the phone, and then signing back in?

If you weren't syncing messages with iCloud, do you have a backup you can restore from? Restoring from a backup erases all data currently on your device. Any data newer then when the backup was made will be erased. A restore is an all or nothing restore. You can't access a backup to see the contents and only restore certain files.

Backup - Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup.    *
